Abstract

A method of making steel comprises forming a mixture of an oxidizing gas and a diluent gas away from the surface of a steel bath and directing the blast on to the surface of the melt. The mixture may comprise oxygen and steam in equal volumes and the steam may be preheated. The blast may be applied by a lance retractably mounted on the roof of an open hearth furnace the discharge end of the lance being angled so that the mixture strikes the molten metal at an angle to the surface.
