Abstract
In a process of refining steel in which an oxygen jet is blown on to the surface of the melt, the jet is given a rotary component of motion on leaving the nozzle so that droplets of metal or slag leaving the surface of the melt due to the reaction are removed centrifugally and, on striking the surface, slag is removed and the metallic surface laid bare. The rotary component of motion in the jet may be produced by a series of oblique ducts or a series of vanes in the nozzle head.
