Abstract
731,152. Treating pig-iron. ALEXANDROVSKY, G. Feb. 1, 1951 [Feb. 2, 1950], No. 2567/51. Class 72. Pig iron from a blast furnace or mixer is subjected to blowing for a time long enough to remove the whole of the silicon and raise the temperature of the metal to a degree at which absorption of nitrogen would commence while it is flowing from the blast furnace or mixer to the conversion apparatus. As shown, the molten metal 4 flowing out of a mixer 1 is subjected to a jet of air from a flat nozzle 5 arranged transversely to the flow of metal. In a modification, Fig. 8, the metal traverses a deepened portion 12 of a trough in which are set pipes 13 through which jets of air, oxygen-enriched air, or oxygen may be blown into the metal. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the trough may he in the form of steps and the oxidizing gas injected through pipes set in the risers of the steps, the jets being parallel to or obliquely of the flow of metal. The trough may be covered and may be arranged to have a rocking movement so that slag may be removed from the surface of the metal.
