Abstract
A three stage surface blowing pig iron refining process comprises blowing oxygen with low blast energy on to a charge in the presence of end slag from the previous batch till the carbon content reaches 3,5-2,5%, at least partially deslagging, adding slag forming materials and continuing blowing with low blast energy until the carbon content reaches 2-1%, completely deslagging, and forming a fresh slag and blowing with increased blast energy until the desired carbon content is reached. During the first two phases the blast pressure may be less than 10 kg/sq. cm. and the blast nozzle located more than 1 met. from the surface, while during the second phase the blast pressure may be 10-15 kg/sq. cm. and the said distance less than 1 met. A slag basicity of more than 50% CaO is maintained during the first two phases. In a modification an amount of mill scale and/or iron ore is added at the end of the second phase in sufficient quantity to bring the FeO content of the slag more than 25%. The slag is then allowed to react vigorously with the bath for a short while prior to its complete removal, and the third stage then carried out.
