Abstract
A method of refining molten phosphorus-containing pig iron with oxygen in a rotating basic lined furnace comprises refining under a limey slag until the carbon content is at least 0.5 per cent while rotating the furnace at high speed, removing the phosphorus-rich, low-iron slag, adding new slag-forming materials and continuing the blow until the carbon has attained the required value. The second slag may be retained in the furnace to form part of the first slag of the following heat when its high iron content will be reduced. The first slag may remove three-quarters of the phosphorus present in the pig iron. Thus the second slag may be small in bulk. After the first slag has been removed, iron ore or scrap may be added along with the new slag-forming materials. Specification 677,349 is referred to.
