Abstract
A method as claimed in claim 1 of parent Specification for the manufacture of iron for use in the production of steel in open hearth or electric furnaces comprises using, as the metal of the bath, a pig iron having a phosphorus content exceeding 0.30 per cent. The pig iron may contain 1.85 per cent P and 3.8 per cent C and after blowing for 35 minutes with a blast comprising 93 per cent oxygen the phosphorus may be reduced to 0.30 per cent and the carbon to 1.4 per cent, the bath temperature rising from 1340 DEG C. to 1490 DEG C. The pig iron may be desulphurized before or after the process or a pig having high silcon and low sulphur may be used, the silicon being removed during the treatment.
