Abstract
A method of producing steel or preliminary metal from pig iron containing 0.1 to 2% phosphorous by blowing oxygen containing gas on to the surface of a slag layer to oxidize FeO to Fe2O3 which is reduced at the slag - metal interface comprises carrying out the process in a refining vessel having a capacity of at least 1.3 cu. m. per metric ton of pig iron and having a depth of metal not exceeding 40 cms. The slag may be treated by the addition of lime or soda to reduce the surface tension or borax or fluorides to increase the surface tension. When steel is being prduced after the phosphorous has been removed the metal may be heated by a burner flame and the Fe2O3 in the slag allowed to remove carbon remaining in the metal, but oxygen may be added if necessary to increase the Fe2O3 in the slag. The phosphorous slag is not removed until the greater part of the Fe2O3 has been reduced. Superheated steam may be added at the beginning of the blow in the proportion of steam to oxygen of 1:2 to 1.4 and the steam is not used for more than 25% of the total time of blowing. The process may be performed in a vessel which may be rotated about its horizontal or vertical axis.
