Abstract

In the manufacture of steel in a Thomas converter, the bath is first blown so as to reduce the phosphorus content to 0.06-0.2 per cent, the slag skimmed off and a second fused basic oxidizing slag added, the converter being raised slightly and then blown, the blast being sufficient only to prevent stopping up of the holes, so that an appreciable stirring of the bath takes place and the slag being made less fluid by applying lime to the surface before tapping. The second slag may be prepared in a converter or in a slag melting furnace, or it may be a Martin or electric furnace slag which is corrected if necessary by the addition of iron oxides, fluxes and/or lime. The bath may be carburized before adding the second slag by the addition of cast iron. Specifications 405,633 and 467,378 are referred to.
