Abstract
In the process as described in the parent Specification, the constituent elements of the slag are charged and the slag is formed from these elements when in contact with the steel at the beginning of the operation. Only part of the elements of the slag may be charged, the rest of the elements such as iron oxide being provided by the steel itself. The constituents of the slag may be caused to melt by the heat of the metal alone by using a flux which is introduced with the other constituents or is provided by the steel itself. When carrying out the process in a basic converter, after the first slag is removed, only a strong base, such as lime, is added, the rest of the slag being provided by the steel bath. The second blowing, however, is carried out for a short time sufficiently long to produce a considerable quantity of iron oxide and in consequence a strongly oxidizing basic slag which effects the refining desired.
