Abstract
To produce a steel of increased sulphur content and good machinability, there is added to a molten mass of steel a metallic sulphite which decomposes at the temperature of the molten mass to give up a substantial proportion of the sulphur as sulphur dioxide. The sulphite may be sodium sulphite, sodium bisulphate, potassium sulphite or lead sulphite added at the rate of 1-5 lbs. per ton of steel. The sodium oxide liberated from sodium sulphite reacts with refractory silicate and aluminate inclusions to remove them by fluxing. As an example, to produce a steel containing .55-.60 carbon, .60-.90 manganese, .04 maximum phosphorus, .04-.07 sulphur, and .15-.30 silicon, 3 lbs. of anhydrous sodium bisulphite were added to each ton of molten steel containing .55 carbon, .75 manganese, .016 phosphorus, .025 sulphur and .19 silicon. In the resultant steel the sulphur was increased to .045, all these figures being percentages by weight. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that free sulphur may be added simultaneously with the metallic sulphite. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
