Abstract

In a process for refining iron in a blast or cupola furnace in the presence of refining agents carried into the furnace by the air blast, the slag is expelled continuously and rapidly by the air blast or gases generated in the furnace through an aperture or apertures which are permanently open. The apertures may be provided above the liquid level in the furnace or the tapping holes for the slag are left open. The refining agents may be injected through twyers placed above the ordinary twyers and may comprise potassium nitrate or carbonate, sodium chloride or carbonate, ammonium chloride magnesium oxide, barium carbonate, lime, fluorspar, or bleaching powder. The charge in the furnace may include ferro-silicon containing at least 6 per cent of silicon or ferro-manganese containing at least 6 per cent of manganese.
