Abstract

In a process for producing steel in the basic bessemer converter, the pig iron, which is first desulphurized by treatment with alkalies, has a silicon content of between 0,5 and 1,25 per cent and a manganese content of below 1,25 and is then blown with air in the usual manner so as to produce finished steel. If the silicon content is too low, it is increased before the treatment in the converter preferably by increasing the silicon content of the pig iron produced in the blast furnace. Instead of alkalies, the iron may be desulphurized by a mixture of lime and fluorspar. If the manganese content of the iron is too low, manganese in the form of manganese alloys should be added to the iron in the ladle, mixer or container before it is treated in the converter to protect the charge during the blowing. If the sulphur content of the pig iron is too high, it may be submitted to a second desulphurizing with alkali &c. both before and after leaving the mixer and preferably in the ladle that conveys the iron to the mixer or from the mixer to the converter.
