Abstract
165,465. Calvert, F. July 16, 1919. Purifying and refining.-In the production of steel from pig and scrap in acid-lined open-hearth furnaces, and under a basic slag, a quantity of fluor-spar sufficient to neutralize the silicon content of the charge is added in stages after melting has begun. At the first stage, at least 25 per cent of the fluor-spar is added, and when the melting is completed lime and limestone are added. Another 25 per cent of fluor-spar is added during the boiling stage, which is continued until the carbon content is about 0.3 per cent above that required in the final product. The remainder of the fluor-spar is then added gradually, and the charge is finished quickly. During tapping, fluorspar may be. added to the metal in the ladle.; fluor-spar may also be added to the metal as it runs from the ladle to the ingot moulds.
