Abstract
1528099 Dephosphorizing crude iron SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Oct 1976 40657/76 Heading C7D Molten pig iron is dephosphorized prior to conversion into steel by treatment at below 1450‹C with a combination of dephosphorizing and oxidation agents such that a slag is formed having a total iron content of 15 to 50% and in which the ratio CaO/SiO 2 +P 2 O 5 lies within the range 0À3 to 3. The oxidizing additions are such as to remove substantially all Si, Mn and P without reducing the C content of the iron by more than 1À5%. Suitable dephosphorizing agents are lime, limestone and converter slag, while the oxidizing agent may be one or both of iron oxide and oxygen according to temperature considerations. There may also be added up to 15 kg per ton of metal of sodium carbonate and/or fluorspar as flux, while during treatment the bath may be agitated by injection of inert gas or by an impellor.
