Abstract
In metallurgical processes, particularly steel making, carried out in vessels lined with magnesia refractory and involving the use of slags having a final content of at least 10% by weight of silica and a base: acid molal ratio of at least 1.5:1 there is added active i.e. amorphous, magnesia in an amount sufficient to produce in the slag a MgO: CaO ratio of 1:15 to 1:3 whereby deterioration of the refractory is reduced. The magnesia may be added in the form of calcined dolomite and may have a surface area greater than 3.5 sq. m/gm. as measured by a nitrogen absorption technique. Preferably the content of fluoride salts in the slag is restricted to less than 3%.
