Abstract

Method of refining cast iron in which a blast of oxygen is blown into the melt from a jet surrounded by a protective curtain of an indothermically dissociating fluid using at least and pref. one only one tuyere of two concentric ducts arranged at the lower part of the lateral wall of the converter. The longitudinal axis of the tuyere makes an acute angle (is approx. 10 degrees) with the diameter of the converter to improve the wettin of scrap metal, and is directed horizontally. Apparatus permits the use of a plane bottomed furnace rather than one with a number of holes in the refractory which is thus mechanically stronger in service.
