Class 72 [Also in Group XII] A process for making steel comprises submitting molten iron to a Bessemer process and then to an open hearth process in the same vessel. As shown, molten metal is supplied to a rotatable furnace 1 which is then rotated to bring tuyeres 13, 14 into the required position below the surface of the metal and an oxidizing gas e.g. air, oxygen enriched air, or oxygen mixed with steam or carbon dioxide, is blown therethrough. The furnace is then rotated into a position in which the tuyeres are above the surface of the metal, the metal deslagged, and hot gases from a burner 7 are passed over the surface of the melt. Molten iron and slag forming materials may be added through two closable doors 19, 20, which may be spaced between 120 and 180 degrees from the tuyeres 13, 14, and the vessel may be tapped through a spout F. Waste gases from the open hearth process may be withdrawn through an outlet 22 connected to recuperators, and during the Bessemer process the doors 19, 20 may be open for the escape of gases. Secondary tuyeres may be supplied which open into the space above the melt to admit an oxidizing gas to burn CO formed during the Bessemer process, or the necessary oxidizing gas may be supplied through the burner 7.
