Abstract

Carbon steel is made by injecting oxygen into a bath of molten iron by means of a lance and continued till the oxygen ceases to flow. The molten iron may be held in a ladle and the oxygen lance inserted below the surface of the metal. The diameter of the lance and the oxygen pressure employed determine the carbon content of the finished steel, e.g. a 3/8 " lance using oxygen at 150 lbs. per sq. in. results in a steel containing 0.25 per cent C. The iron may be blown with a 1/2 " lance to 0.2/0.3 C and then with a 3/8 " lance to 0.03 C. The final temperature may be raised by adding 1-5 lbs. ferromanganese and giving the metal a five minute after-blow.
