Abstract

1519. Dobbelstein, O. Jan. 21. Blast furnaces; blast furnace charges. - A furnace for use in reducing pulverulent or dust iron ores has a coking and smelting chamber o, in the walls of which are heating- flues m communicating with a chimney flue d. Blast is supplied to the lower part of the chamber from pipes g, and air for effecting combustion of the gases given off during the coking process is admitted into the upper parts of the flues m by means of pipes c. A taphole s is formed in the lower part of the chamber, and a pipe r is fitted to the top of the chamber and is employed for conducting the waste gases, evolved during the smelting process, to the hot-blast stoves. An intimate mixture of about equal parts of ores and dust coal, and an anthracite or fat coking-coal, is first coked in the chamber, the pipe r, taphole s, and blast pipes g being closed ; then the charge is smelted, the flue d and pipes c being closed, and the pipe r, blast pipes g, and taphole being opened.
