Abstract

2988. Newton, P. A., [Westman Process Co.]. Feb. 7. Metallurgical furnaces.-In a process for reducing iron ores to obtain wrought iron, water or steam is mixed with a current of heated air and passed through glowing fuel, the resulting gases, freed if necessary from sulphur and carbonic acid, being passed at a temperature of about 1100‹ C. througb the ore, which may be mixed with a small proportion of carbon. An apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a reducing-furnace A connected by a channel B with a producer D. Air is forced by a blower E into pipes F<1> set in a chamber F, having a combustion chamber I to which heating-gases from the furnace A are led, air being supplied through openings J. The products of combustion are led off through a stack K<1>. Water is sprayed into the pipes F<1> from pipes G, and the air and steam mixture is forced through tuyeres M into the producer D. To free the gas from sulphur, the coke charged to the producer is mixed with 10 per cent of limestone. To free the gas from carbonic acid, the gas is passed through a channel B supplied with coke from a hopper C'. The amount of water supplied from the pipes G is regulated so that the gases leaving the channel B have a temperature of about 1100‹ C. The ore is preferably mixed with about three per cent of carbon and briquetted. The process may be used for reducing ores containing phosphoric acid or titanic acid.
