Abstract
In a process for smelting iron ores in a rectangular shaft furnace, (see Group XII), comminuted ore and bituminous coal is briquetted with a binder, e.g. lime, clay, marl, or pitch, charged into the shaft to an approximately constant height within the limits 2-6 metres above the tuyere level, the tuyeres being oppositely disposed at a distance of not more than 2 metres, and provision is made for condensing tars from the furnace gases. The briquettes may be ovoids having a volume not greater than 300 ccs., preferably 40-80 ccs., and, where slaked lime is used, may be hardened by treating with CO2-containing gases. Part of the charge may be replaced by lumps of ore of the same size as the briquettes. The furnace blast may be hot air, a mixture of hot air and oxygen or a mixture of cold air and oxygen, the oxygen content being of the order of 35 per cent.-40 per cent. The blast temperature need not be more than approximately 500 DEG C.
