Abstract
523,810. Alloys. BERYLLIUM CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1939, Nos. 1360 and 1361. Convention dates, Jan. 14, 1938, and Nov. 14, 1938. [Class 82 (i)] Alloys of beryllium, particularly with'copper, are obtained by reducing a mixture of beryllium oxide and carbon in the presence of copper, preferably finely divided, or of copper oxide with excess of carbon, in a furnace, which may be an arc or induction furnace, wherein a zone of maximum heat is produced towards the centre of the charge and is surrounded by zones of successively decreasing temperatures such that the outer portions of the charge are not above 1285‹ C., and preferably not above 850‹ C. Copper, which may be in the form of pieces, is added and melts through the charge so as to wash out the beryllium-copper alloy produced, and such copper and the reduction mixture may be charged alternately. Beryllium compounds such as hydroxide, basic carbonate, nitrate, or organic derivatives, may be used instead of the oxide, and the process may be applied to the production of alloys of beryllium with metals other than copper, which especially on reduction show a similar behaviour to copper.
