606,641. Magnesium. SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH, HONORARY ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR. Sept. 8, 1942, No. 12669. Convention date, Feb. 5. [Class 82(i)] Apparatus for the production of magnesium by thermal reduction of magnesiacontaining material with ferro-silicon comprises a furnace, a plurality of metal retorts horizontally disposed with a reducing portion within the furnace and a condensing portion without the furnace, a removable condenser for collecting magnesium within the condensing zone of each retort and having at its outer end direct thermal contact with the wall of the retort, means for water-cooling the retort wall adjacent said thermal contact, and separate means within said water-cooled zone of the retort for collecting and removing sodium or other pyrophoric metal independently of the magnesium. The thermal contact may comprise a narrow metal band 8, Fig. 2, between the condenser 7 and the retort wall 4; or may comprise a closure plate 11b, Fig. 4, for the condenser 7, and said plate may have broadened shoulders 21 engaging the condenser and the retort wall 4.
