Abstract

544,888. Making compound forms. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., BROWN, W. B. D., and HOLLIGAN, P. T. Oct. 25, 1940, No. 15690. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Thermo-aluminic processes.-Dissimilar metals such as steel and aluminium are bonded together by producing an exo-thermionic reaction at the mating surfaces. One or both surfaces may be treated with aluminium and either iron oxide or copper oxide or a mixture of aluminium with one of these oxides may be placed between the parts. The exo-thermionic-reaction may be started by external heat such as by an ignited magnesium ribbon alone or together with potassium nitrate or manganese dioxide the bonding being effected under pressure. A mixture of one part of aluminium with either two parts of iron oxide or four and a half parts of copper oxide may be used. The steel strip may be of channel shape.
