Abstract

Molten ferrous metals are purified by bringing the metal into contact with a fluid slag produced by the ignition of an exothermic reaction mixture comprising calcium oxide, iron oxide, and elemental aluminium. The calcium oxide and iron oxide may be in the form of calciumferrite. The amount of calcium oxide may be not less than one mole for each mole of iron oxide and may also be such that there is not less than one mole for each mole of alumina in the slag formed. The materials of the mixture may be finely divided and intimately mixed. The mixture may be ignited and the metal added to the slag produced or the metal may be poured on to the dry mixture in a ladle. All the mixture, amounting to 0.6-8.0 per cent of the weight of metal, may be added at the beginning of pouring or may be added in small quantities during pouring.
