Alloys; thermo-aluminic and like mixtures and metal-extracting processes.-Iron alloys containing chromium and silicon for the production of castings suitable for ships' propellers, pit props, and other articles, are made by reducing a. pure chemical compound of iron and chromium with a thermo-aluminic or like agent in which a siliconcontaining material is employed. White iron or forge scale or a silicide may be used in the mixture to yield the silicon. Solutions of chrome alum and ferrous sulphate may be mixed and precipitated with sodium carbonate, and the washed and dried precipitate mixed with aluminium powder or similar reducing-agent. The mixture is ignited and the product run into molten iron or steel in a ladle. The proportions are so adjusted that the final alloy contains from 9 to 14 per cent of chromium, and from 0.2 to 0.5 per cent of silicon. Specification 137,080 is referred to.
