Abstract

To reduce the amount of metal in the feeder head of a mould there is applied to the head, after pouring an exothermic mixture comprising aluminium, an oxidizer and a slag-forming agent. The exothermic mixture may consist of 15 to 30, preferably 19, per cent of aluminium, 60 to 75, preferably 70, of magnetic iron oxide, 0.1 to 3.0, preferably 0.3, of carbon and 5.5 to 12, preferably 6, of slag-forming agent, e.g. fluorspar. Up to 5 per cent of alloying material, e.g. manganese, chromium or nickel or oxides thereof may also be added.
