Abstract

In the manufacture of steel there is added to the molten metal during its flow from the furnace an oxide of a metal constituent of the steel, the oxide being substantially free from oxides of other substances. Iron oxide in the form of mill scale or the oxides of alloying elements already present in the steel, e.g. nickel, chromium or manganese oxides, may be added in amount between 28 and 72 pounds to a 45-ton charge.
