Abstract

Grey cast-iron of improved physical and mechanical properties is produced by adding into a molten mass of iron a small percentage of copper fluoride, e.g. 0.25 per cent. Small amounts of molybdenum, nickel or copper may be added with the fluoride. Iron treated according to the invention may have the following composition: Fe 98.550-87.7 per cent, Si 0.2-3.0 per cent, Mn 0.2-3.0 per cent, S 0.025-0.3 per cent, P 0.025-1.0 per cent, C 1.0-5.0 per cent. A particular example contained Fe 92.75 per cent, total C 3.0 per cent, combined C 0.7 per cent, Si 2.0 per cent, Mn 1.0 per cent,.S 0.1 per cent, P 0.2 per cent, Cu 0.25 per cent.
