Abstract

A metallic abrasive in the form of shot or grit has the following composition: C, 1.20-2.75 per cent; Si, 0.2-2.0 per cent; Mn, 0.2-1.0 per cent; S traces to 0.25 per cent; P, 0.05-1.5 per cent; Fe, and unavoidable impurities, the balance; and is heat treated by quenching from a temperature in excess of 850 DEG C and tempering at 100-550 DEG C. The unavoidable impurities may comprise Ni up to 0.5 per cent, Cu up to 1 per cent and Cr up to 0.5 per cent.
