Abstract

1,187,275. Alloy steel springs. DEFENCE, SECRETARY OF. July 3, 1968 [April 4, 1967], No. 15284/67. Heading C7A. Springs made of an alloy steel consisting, by weight, of C 0À25-0À55% Mn 0À25-3% Si 1-2À5% Mo 0À5-3% Cu 1-3% V 0À1-1% Fe and impurities - balance, are carburized to increase their surface C content (preferably to not more than 0À8%), soaked above the AC 3 point, quenched and tempered (desirably at 500‹ - 650‹ C. ). Impurities preferably do not exceed 0À03% each of S and P, and 0À2% Ni. After tempering, the springs may be hot-set, or may be shotpeened and then heat treated at 200‹ -220‹ C.
