Abstract
A steel which will resist creep, and is particularly applicable for the manufacture of parts of gas turbines, has the following composition:-C 0.1-0.6 per cent; Si 0.5-2.5 per cent; Cr 14.0-25.0 per cent; Ni 7.0-25.0 per cent; W 5.1-15.0 per cent; Co 4.0-25.0 per cent; Ti 0-2.5 per cent; one or both of Nb and Ta 0-2.5 per cent; Fe and impurities the balance; and is subjected to thermal treatment comprising a heating between 855 DEG C and 1300 DEG C. Steels having the composition specified in the parent Specification may also be subjected to this heat treatment. The treatment may be at 1100 DEG C-1300 DEG C for 1/2 to 2 hours followed by slow or quick cooling or alternatively it may comprise two consecutive heatings at the high temperature each followed by slow or quick cooling and the cooling after the last heating may be followed by annealing at 850-950 DEG C for 4-8 hours. Thus treatment may comprise the following series of operations, heating for 1 hour at 1150 DEG C, cooling in air or water, heating for 1/2 -1 hour at 1175 DEG C or 1200 DEG C cooling in air, and finally annealing at 900-925 for 6 hours.
