Abstract

A method of heat treating nickel chrome alloys to develope creep properties comprises subjecting the alloy to solution heating, cooling to a low temperature and subjecting to a precipitation hardening characterized in that an additional heating is interposed between the cooling and precipitation hardening at a temperature between the solution treating and the precipitation hardening and so high that the maximum hardness is developed within one hour and the additional heating is carried on after maximum hardness has developed. The alloys referred to have composition 5-90 per cent Ni, 0-85 per cent Fe, 10-35 per cent Cr, 0-70 per cent Co, 0-30 per cent Mo, 0.5-10 per cent of at least one of Ti, Al, Nb, Ta with or without C up to 2 per cent, Si up to 1 per cent, Mn up to 5 per cent, V up to 1 per cent, Cu up to 3 per cent and Be up to .25 per cent, the total of these alternative elements being not more than 10 per cent. Ti or Al should not exceed 5 per cent and two parts of Mo may be replaced by one part of W. The solution heating may be above 1000 DEG C, the additional heating between 750 DEG C and 950 DEG C for from 1 to 24 hours and the precipitation heating between 600 DEG C and 750 DEG C and may be for a longer time than the additional heating. An article may be machined after cooling and before subjecting to any reheating step. Specification 583,845 is referred to.
