Abstract
Nickel chromium alloys consisting of at least 50 per cent Ni (which may be replaced by Co up to 40 per cent of the alloy), 5-45 per cent Cr, and 40 per cent (max.) of the following addition elements, 1 per cent (max.) C, 5 per cent (max.) Ti or Si, 25 per cent (max.) Mo and 18 per cent (max.) of each or any of W, Fe, Mn, Al, and V are given a preliminary heat treatment of at least 650 DEG C. and not more than 895 DEG C. before subjecting them to the normal heat treatment. The preliminary treatment may be for 5 to 30 hours and the temperature may be reduced by an amount not exceeding 200 DEG C. during the treatment, gradually or by one or more steps, e.g. 2 hours at 850 DEG C. and 16 hours at 700 DEG C. The alloy may be cooled before being submitted to a normal heat treatment of 1020-1100 DEG C. quenching and ageing at 650-850 DEG C. The alloy may be of the type described in Specification 607,616.
