Abstract

Stable beta phase-containing alloys of Ti have compositions within the following range, 1-50 per cent in total of one or more of Mo, V, Nb and Ta, 0-12 per cent in total of one or more of the elements Cr, Mn, Fe, W, Co, Ni, Si and Be, the Cr and Mn not exceeding 6 per cent and the others not exceeding 3 per cent in total, each of Mo and V exceeding 2 per cent when present with Cr or Mn alone and Cr exceeding 2.5 per cent when present with Mo alone, the balance of the alloys being Ti. The alloys may contain 0-0.2 per cent each of CO and N provided that the Mo and V contents exceed 5 per cent when either is present with W and exceed 2 per cent when either is present with Cr. 0.5-7.5 per cent Al may be present provided that the C content is less than 0.1 per cent when the alloy contains Mn. A working and heat treating operation referred to comprises rolling at 1400 DEG F., cleaning and rolling to final gauge at 1300 DEG F., holding for 1/2 hour at 1300 DEG F, furnace cooling to 1100 DEG F, air cooling to room temperature and ageing, e.g. at 750 DEG F. or 500 DEG F.
