Abstract

1,035,484. Casting composite pistons. SPECIALLOID Ltd. April 30, 1963 [Feb. 26, 1962], No. 7462/62. Heading B3F. A process of making a light metal piston includes applying a metallic bonding layer to a ferrous metal insert and casting-on the light metal at a temperature lower than the melting point of the bonding layer, the thickness of the bonding layer and the temperature and time of casting being so regulated that the formation of a ferro-aluminium alloy is substantially avoided. The metal of the bonding layer may be gold, silver, manganese or chromium based, copper and its alloys, e.g. Cu/Zn, Cu/Sn, Cu/Al, Ci/Si, nickel or Ni/P alloy, and may be applied by hot dipping, plating, diffusion, spraying, electrophoresis. Alternatively it may be applied by the method described in Specification 1,035,485 which is referred wherein the insert is rotated in a bath of the molten metal at a rate such that the metal oxide is scoured from the insert which becomes coated.
