Abstract

Ferrous metal structural components are tinned by immersion in a tin salt melt before aluminium or aluminium-base alloys are cast around or on to the surface thereof. An electrodeposit of iron is preferably applied to components made of cast iron having pronounced coarse veins of graphite or steels alloyed with nickel before tinning them. The example relates to the tinning of a stainless steel peg in a melt consisting of 50-62% SNCl2 and 50-38% KCl before being cast around with aluminium-silicon alloy. According to the Provisional Specification, the tin coating may be applied galvanically or by immersion and may be thermally after-treated.
