Abstract
561,661. Casting composite articles. PROCTOR, W. F., and WEBB, G. W. Dec. 9, 1942, No. 17509. [Class 83 (i)] Culinary utensils, pistons or other composite metal articles are made by placing an insert in a mould, casting another metal into the mould under pressure and exerting pressure on both metals, preferably by hydraulic means, until the casting solidifies. The molten metal may be cast at a temperature within its viscous range and the insert may have projections &c. to improve adhesion. An aluminium or magnesium alloy may be thus cast onto steel, ferrous alloy, copper, nickel or chromium base alloy or magnesium alloy may be cast onto aluminium or copper alloy. An aluminium spun or pressed insert 2 may have magnesium-aluminium alloy near its solidification point pressure-cast at 4 and then have pressure applied by a hydraulically-operated die 1 to form a utensil. The aluminium lining may be plated with chromium and the outside, also have an applied chromated or other protective coating.
