733,981. Casting composite articles. FAIRCHILD ENGINE & AIRPLANE CORPORATION. Oct. 15, 1953 [May 21, 1953], No. 28516/53. Class 83(1). [Also in Group VIII] In a method of making a metal casting and simultaneously permanently uniting it to a thin sheet of a different metal having a surface compatible with the casting metal, the sheet is mounted in a mould having a cavity surface of the form required for the sheet on the finished casting and the molten casting metal is injected into the mould at a pressure sufficient to force the sheet into co-extensive engagement with the mould surface and at a temperature to alloy with the compatible surface of the sheet. As applied to a sole-plate for a flat iron, a stainlesssteel sheet 12, 0.006-0.030 inches thick is bonded to an aluminium body 11. The sheet 12 is coated on its inner surface with a ferroaluminium alloy film, preferably by the process disclosed in Specification 599,684, and while the film is still molten or plastic, mounted in a die 19, 20, and aluminium injected therein at a pressure of 4000-15,000 lbs. per sq. inch. Alternatively the coating on the sheet 12 is allowed to cool and is then softened immediately before casting and while positioned in the mould, as, e.g., by heating with a gas burner, Fig. 4 (not shown), to a temperature of 1300-1450‹ F. The sheet is positioned in the die by a flange 14 which is subsequently removed, and a pin 23. The sheet may be of a metal immediately compatible with molten aluminium by alloying therewith, such as silver, copper, nickel, chromium, titanium, molybdenum, tantalum, and the alloys thereof. Sheets made of these metals or alloys or ferrous metal sheet coated or plated therewith or with brazing, tinning, galvanizing or soldering metal or alloy, may be united with the casting metal without pretreatment except cleaning or fluxing. The casting metal may be magnesium, titanium, copper or alloys thereof. Other articles such as calendering rolls and pressing-machine shoes may also be provided with a thin sheet-metal surface.
