Abstract
Articles made of metal alloys which are required to fit closely an uneven surface as in the case of dental plates or the plates employed to replace portions of skull bones are made by deposition on a mould of a large number of thin layers of the constituent metals. Diffusion of the metals takes place which may be completed by subsequent heating. The deposition may be effected by electrolysis or by spraying. The alternation of the layers may be arranged so that the outer layers contain a higher proportion of precious metal. The mould is first coated with precious metal foil which preferably extends beyond the mould to prevent ingress of the deposited metal between the mould and the foil; the projecting part of the foil is covered with a resist. The foil is lightly etched before deposition. There may be 50 layers starting with alternate layers of silver and gold and then of copper, silver and gold. The article may be made in two halves deposited on moulds one of which is a negative of the other, the two halves being joined by soldering or welding. A sheet of foil may be applied to one or both halves to facilitate union. In this way a more uniform section of the finished article is obtained, inadequate deposition on recessed parts of the one mould being compensated in the other.
