Abstract
Billets, slabs and bars of titanium or titanium base alloys are protected against surface oxidation by coating them with silver or silver base alloy. The coating is preferably applied by electrodeposition but may be applied by other methods, e.g. spraying, vacuum deposition or in the form of a preformed layer secured to the titanium by heat and/or pressure. As an example, a titanium extrusion billet was cleaned by rough machining and sand or shot blasting, coated by electrodeposition with silver to a depth of 0.005 inch and preheated in a furnace to 850 DEG C. before being extruded. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 749,365.
