Abstract

Surfaces of metals and alloys are modified by subjecting the surface to controlled sand-blasting and coating several times with a fluorinated polymer, each coating forming a layer or 1 mu thick, heating to the softening or coalescing temp. of the polymer, and cooling the product. Excellent adhesion is obtained between the layer of fluorinated polymer and the metal or alloy surface. The modified surface has a very low coefficient of friction. The modified metals or alloys can be formed into shape by mechanical methods, and are resistant to oxidation and high temps.
