Abstract

749,529. Casting composite articles; making bearings; rolling. FAULKNER, C. J. April 22, 1954 [Aug. 26, 1953], No. 23539/53. Classes 83 (1), 83 (2) and 83 (4). A bearing comprises a sheet or strip of aluminium-tin alloy having anti-friction properties, backed by aluminium or a tin-free aluminium alloy, obtained by subjecting a cast composite ingot to a combination of cold work, such as forging, pressing or rolling, and heat treatment to globularise the tin as described in Specification 666,087, [Group II], which is referred to, the sheet or strip being bonded by way of the tin-free layer to a steel backing-layer. The ingot may be produced by casting aluminiumtin alloy on to a plate of aluminium, or by pouring into a mould aluminium-tin alloy and then, before solidification is complete, aluminium or tin-free aluminium alloy. The steel backing-strip may be coated with a metal, such as nickel, silver or aluminium, to prevent oxidization, and is bonded to the composite strip by passing the assembly between rolls at temperatures below 250‹ C. The bearing strip may finally be heat-treated, preferably by annealing at 350‹ C.
