Abstract

1374116 Making metal sheet, tape, ribbon; altering physical properties CENTRE STEPHANOIS DE RECHERCHES MECANIQUES HYDROMECANIQUE ET FROTTEMENT 22 Nov 1971 [23 Nov 1970 16 Nov 1971] 54163/71 Headings B3A and B3V [Also in Division C7] The resistance of steel parts to wear and abrasion is increased by cold working the parts in depth and by a further operation to increase the cold working at the surface. Deep cold working extends to a depth of 1À5-3 mm. and the further operation to a depth of 0À2-0À5 mm. A weld-inhibiting layer of sulphide, telluride or an iodide or iron may then be deposited electrochemically at a temperature below 400‹ C., e.g. 190‹ C., and to a depth of 2-20 microns. The operations performed may be (1) knurling followed by rollering with cambered rollers which also restore the part to its pre-knurled size, (2) rolling and coiling (3) rolling and hammering and (4) stamping and embossing. A shaft and ring of tempered Hadfield steel of 1À2% C and 12% Mn may be treated by operations (1). A tape is treated by operations (2), a ribbon by operations (3) and a metal sheet by operations (4). Surface Vickers hardness above 700 HV can be achieved, decreasing to 250 HV, the normal hardness of the material, at a depth of 1À5-2 mm. (Fig. 2). Residual stress at the surface is above 80 daN per sq. mm. (Fig. 1).
