Abstract

396,110. Making nuts, bolts, &c. WILCOX, R. L. and WATERBURY FARRELL FOUNDRY & MACHINE CO., Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A. Nov. 3, 1931, No. 30495. [Class 83 (iv).] Apparatus for making nuts, bolts, rivets, screws, &c., comprises a die 13 wherein a blank which has been severed by a shear blade 19 from a bar 17 is upset to dome shape by a die 32 and a die 14 wherein the blank is shaped by a plunger 33 bearing on the dome shaped blank over an area less than its diameter thus leaving a chamfered face, the shaped blank in the case of a nut being finally transferred to a die 16 and pierced by a punch 34. The domed blank is pushed off the die 32 by spring pin 35 and out of the die 13 by an ejector 20. The shaping die 14 has the matrix 25 supported within it by a spring 30, contacting shoulders 24, 26 being formed on the two parts ; the tools 33, 28 between which the nut is shaped have flaring projections to form central depressions in the nut faces preparatory to punching out the aperture. Fig. 6 shows a modification for shaping a nut 44, Fig. 8, with a flange 43, wherein the blank is initially domed on one side only by the dies 13<1>, 32<1> and the flange is formed at the nut shaping stage by the hollow member 42 within the die 41. If the nut is to be flat on one side the tops of the plunger 45 and hollow member 42 are shaped as shown in Fig. 9. Specification 388,412 is referred to.
