Abstract

487,667. Forging nuts &c. WILCOX, R. L., and WATERBURY FARREL FOUNDRY & MACHINE CO. Sept. 23, 1936, No. 25875. [Class 83 (iv)] In a machine more particularly for the manufacture of nuts from a bar from which a blank is severed by a cutter, the blank is carried forward to a series of stations for successive operations by transferring fingers actuated in part by and moved with the cutting mechanism. One set of tools is fixed and the other moved by a slide all the tools operating at each movement of the slide and a complete nut resulting therefrom. As shown there is provided a set of fixed dies comprising a cut-off die 68, squaring-die 69, upsetting-dies 70, 71 and piercing-die 72 with corresponding backing blocks 73. A slide 13 carries tool holders with a pressure punch 44, upsetting- punch 48 and ejector pin 50, upsetting-punch 54, and piercing-punch 55. A cutter 85 with spring fingers 130 cuts off a blank from a rod advanced by feed rolls through the die 68 and carries it to the die 69. Spring fingers 111 are mounted to move with the cutter and transfer the blanks to the successive dies. The forward movement of the slide 13 projects the blank into the die 69 and against a knock-out rod 87 to square the blank. After leaving the die 69 the blank is domed in the die 70 and subsequently ejected therefrom by a pin 50 and knock-out rod 88. In the die 71 the blank is compressed and the shape finished and in the die 72 the punch 55 pierces a hole and the finished nut is stripped from the punch by a plate 80 and falls into a shoot. The knock-out rods are operated in unison from a shaft through corresponding rock levers mounted on another shaft and moved through cam action. The spring fingers 111 are mounted on studs on one or other of two slide members 108 connected together and to the cutter bar. The fingers are opened as the slide 13 moves forwardly by the engagement of rounded studs 116 with cam surfaces on the moving dies.
