In a heading or upsetting machine in which stock is fed through an apertured cutter which moves in a straight line to sever the blank and carry it to a transfer station where it is ejected into the fingers of a transfer mechanism, the said mechanism continues the movement of the blank in a straight line to a working station, having its axis in the same plane as the axes of the cut-off transfer stations. The stock 8 is fed through a die block 2, shearing die 6 and apertured cutter 10 until it abuts an adjustable stop 32. The cutter, which is secured to a slide 14, is then moved to cut-off the blank and carry it to a position beneath an ejector pin 9, where it is gripped by spring- pressed transfer fingers 28 with blank-receiving grooves, the fingers being pivotally mounted on a slide 15. A movement of the ejector pin 9 pushes the blank through the fingers 28 until it engages a stop 33 and is clear of the cutter 10, whereupon the slide 15 is operated to carry the blank to a position opposite a die 11 into which it is pushed and then headed by a punch 34. An ejector pin 13 then removes the work from the die. The slide 14 is operated from a cam 17 which engages a runner 18 on a cam slide 19 which is connected through an intermediate slide 20 with the slide 14. The slide 20 is adjustable on the slide 19 by means of a set-screw 21 working in the slide 19 and pressing the slide 20 against a spring 22. The screw 21 is surrounded by a sleeve 23 and both pass through a hole 24 in the machine frame, between which and the slide 19 is mounted a compression spring 25. Lock nuts 26 mounted on the sleeve form a stop to limit the forward movement of the cam slide. The cam 17 is shaped so that it positively controls the cutter during the shearing operation but allows it to be under the control of the spring 25 and lock nuts 26 when in the forward position. Slide 15 is similarly actuated.
