Abstract

621,622. Forging; shearing. STEVENS, A. H. (National Machinery Co.). April 11, 1946, No. 11140. [Class 83 (iv)] Forging-dies.-In a header such as that disclosed in Specification 601,977, comprising a shearing bush movable from a stock-feeding and shearing station into alignment with a die into which the sheared blank is pushed by a plunger within the bush, the diameter of the die is greater than that of the stock and the shearing bush is arranged to cut off a blank longer than the depth of the die. The die-holding member 10 of a multiple header has an aperture 11 through which stock S is fed into a shearing bush 16 carried by an arm 15, until a plunger 19 therein has been pushed back into engagement with a gauge stop 18. The bush 16 is then moved to shear the stock and carry the blank 24 into a position opposite a die-aperture 13 of greater diameter, into which it is pushed by the plunger 19 under the action of a punch 23. Continued movement of the punch causes the plunger to upset the blank as shown in Fig. 4. As the punch retires a spring 26 withdraws the end of the plunger from the die so that the shearing member may return, carrying the plunger with it in such a position that it will not contact the side of the gauge 18. The header slide 22 may then be operated again to perform a second operation on the blank. In a modified form, Fig. 8, the shearing bush 78, on the side opposite to the cutting edge, is recessed at 83 to insure against interference with the end of the blank when the arm 77 is retracted. The die 42 is mounted in a bore in the frame 41 with limited longitudinal movement against the action of a spring 48, which also serves to retract the ejector rod 50.
