Abstract
572,332. Forging-machines ; blanks, transferring. WILCOX, R. L., and WATERBURY FARREL FOUNDRY & MACHINE CO. May 13, 1943, No. 7622. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Transfer mechanism for carrying a work-piece from one station to another comprises a swinging arm bearing a finger coacting therewith to grip and carry the work when actuated by a cam-operated rock-shaft, the finger being adjustable on the arm in the longitudinal direction thereof. As applied to a machine for heading wire blanks, the wire is fed through a die 13, Fig. 3, against an end stop 44 and is cut off by cutters 15, 16 which transfer the blank opposite an ejector 14 and from this position it is transferred opposite the heading die 12, Fig. 1, by an oscillating arm 19 pivoted at 18. A block 20 is adjustably secured to the arm and carries an adjustable finger 21 provided with a notch 25 in which the blank may be held by a latch 22 engaged by a spring 24. The arm is oscillated by a cam 54 having an adjustable segment 35 acting on a lever 37 pivoted at 36 and under the influence of a spring 40, the lever being connected by a link 46 to a rock-shaft 27 carrying an arm 29 acting on the arm 19 through a link 30. Adjustable stops 31, 51 on the machine frame engage opposite sides of a lug 32 on the arm 19 to limit its oscillation in both directions and a spring 50 in the link 46 yields after the stop 51 has been engaged to allow the lever 37 to complete its cam-actuated movement. If the blank A, Fig. 3, is of such a length that it projects beyond the cutting dies 15, 16, the arm 19 is rocked upwardly by the cam to raise the finger 21 above the ejecting station 14 whilst the blank is being ejected, after which it descends, snaps over the projecting blank, and then transfers the latter to the heading die 12. For short blanks as shown in Fig. 3, the thickness of the finger 21 is reduced at 21<1> and the arm 19 stops in its upward position with the notch 25 opposite the ejector so that the blank may be pushed into the finger 21 and then transferred to the die 12.
