229,561. Shields, T., (Timken Roller Bearing Co.). July 11, 1924. Bearings.-A punching or pressing machine especially adapted to punch roll pockets in the cages of roller bearings includes means for mounting the punches and limiting the punching stroke, together with means for stripping the punches from the work. A ring of pivoted punches 1 is connected detachably by bolts 24 to a loose sliding member 11 controlled by springs 10. A ram 5 descends until the ring of punches is lowered into the die block 3, a centring ring 26 co-operating with the conical upper part 20 of the die block during this process to secure exact positioning of the punches. When the centring ring engages the part 20, the punches are fixed against further descent, but the ram descends still further by compressing the springs 10. This further movement causes the conical mandrel 4 to force the punches radially outwards through the cage blank 2 and into slots in the surrounding die block 3. On the return movement the ram and mandrel relieve the pressure on the springs before the punches are moved upwardly, and stripper plates 35 move the punches inwards to release them from the blank during this period. Further upward movement then raises the punches clear of the dies. The punching stroke is limited by stops 31 on the punches striking against the ring 20. At the end of the upward movement a bar 43, connected to the ram, contacts with the member 39 and raises the lower die 3 out of the holder to enable the blank to be stripped therefrom. The spring 41 restores the die to its seating when the pressure of the bar 43 is removed. Fig. 7 shows a perforated cage undergoing a second operation in the press, to bevel off the corners of the bridges between the slots. A sliding spring pin 56 engages one of the slots to position the cage, the pin being forced rearwardly by one of the shaping punches 51 during its acting stroke.
